The Power of Touch: What Happens During a Full Body Massage

As a massage therapist with over 15 years of experience, I'm often asked - what actually happens during a full-body massage?

Getting a massage may seem indulgent, but the benefits go far beyond simple relaxation. The power of human touch has the ability to lower stress hormones, reduce inflammation, relieve muscle tension and improve overall well-being.

When you walk into our peaceful sanctuary in Lymington, we sit down with you to understand your needs. Are you looking to de-stress, address chronic pain or simply unwind? This allows us to customise the perfect massage experience for you.

Once you're ready, you'll be guided to the treatment room outfitted with soft lighting, tranquil music and aromatherapy oils. After disrobing, you'll lie comfortably under cosy blankets and weighted sheets.

We’ll begin with soothing effleurage strokes to warm up the muscles. Then incorporate kneading, friction and vibration techniques to address problem areas. Slow, fluid motions encourage circulation while triggering the release of feel-good endorphins.

As we work through the body, you'll feel knots dissolving. Tight shoulders and stiff necks give way to deep relaxation. The constant chatter of the mind quiets down. Many clients even drift off to sleep!

Some of our most popular full-body spa treatments include:

Balinese Bliss

A gentle massage inspired by the island of Bali, using blankets and essential oils to nourish and calm. This treatment transports you to the lush jungles and serene beaches of Indonesia, helping melt away the stresses of everyday life.

Ibizan Odyssey

An invigorating deep tissue massage using global techniques to relax muscles and joints. We incorporate elements from sports massage, trigger point therapy, myofascial release and cross-fiber friction to address chronic tightness and pain. You'll leave feeling energized and limber.

Lazy Lombok

Hot stone therapy to melt away tension, speed healing and promote tranquility. The radiant warmth of the stones stimulates circulation while inducing deep muscle relaxation. As we glide the smooth stones over the body, you'll feel aches and pains slipping away.

Meditative Reflexology

Focused pressure on the feet to create balance throughout the body. Reflexology is based on the principle that points on the feet correspond to organs and glands in the body. By stimulating these reflex zones, blockages are cleared and the body comes back into harmony. This treatment is deeply restorative.

Borneo Stress Buster

Combining massage and reflexology to relieve back, neck and shoulder pain. We start by addressing problem areas with therapeutic massage before finishing with a reflexology session to restore the nervous system. You'll walk out feeling lighter and more at ease.

Restorative Facial

A vitamin-infused facial with lymphatic drainage and relaxing scalp massage. Your skin will be deeply cleansed, exfoliated and nourished with natural botanicals. As we work on the face, a head and neck rub melts away facial tension. You'll leave with smooth, glowing skin and a calm mind.

Peaceful Pregnancy Massage

Relieve aches and pains during this special time. Pregnancy massage eases muscle strain, improves circulation, and provides comfort as your body changes. We use safe prenatal techniques and coconut oil to nourish skin and relax both mother and baby.

Post Natal Nurturing

Restore balance to your body after labour. Gentle massage therapy helps the womb contract, increases blood flow, relieves pain and encourages the production of oxytocin to boost mood. Mothers will feel cared for and supported.

Why is Massage So Beneficial?

The physical manipulation of soft tissue has extensive benefits for the body and mind. Here are just some of the ways massage can improve health:

  • Lowers heart rate and blood pressure. Soothing massage motions reduce the production of stress hormones like cortisol. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system responsible for rest and digestion.

  • Releases endorphins. These "feel good" chemicals are released during massage. Endorphins interact with receptors in the brain to reduce pain signals and enhance mood. This brings about a sense of euphoria.

  • Increases circulation. Massage techniques such as effleurage, petrissage and friction increase blood flow throughout the body. Enhanced circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to muscles and organs.

  • Improves lymphatic drainage. The lymphatic system has no pump and relies on movement and massage to circulate lymph fluid. This brings waste products to the bloodstream for elimination.

  • Reduces muscle tension. Chronic tightness and adhesions in connective tissue can be broken down by massage. This increases mobility and range of motion.

  • Triggers relaxation response. Soothing touch sends signals to the brain to begin the process of deep relaxation. The body shifts from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest.

  • Boosts serotonin. The calming effects of massage boost serotonin levels. This feel-good chemical plays a key role in regulating mood, sleep, digestion and pain perception.

  • Enhances skin health. Massage increases circulation and delivery of nutrients to skin cells. This can improve tone and elasticity.

The multitude of physical benefits lead to an array of positive psychological effects:

  • Alleviates anxiety and depression. Human touch releases oxytocin which counters depressive thoughts and worries. Massage also increases self-esteem.

  • Improves sleep quality. By reducing muscle tension and calming the nervous system, massage therapy can help insomnia and enhance sleep.

  • Heightens focus and concentration. The relaxation response allows the mind to enter a clearer, more focused state. This increases work performance.

  • Reduces fatigue. The circular kneading motions of massage help to eliminate lactic acid buildup that contributes to fatigue. People feel re-energized after massage.

  • Fosters well-being. The caring connection of massage satisfies the fundamental human need for touch. Sessions promote an overall feeling of health and wellness.

As you can see, massage is far more than a luxurious treat. Regular therapy provides profound benefits, both physical and emotional. Integrating massage into self-care routines is a powerful way to enhance quality of life.

For Headaches & Migraines:

If you suffer from debilitating headaches, targeted massage in the neck, shoulders and scalp can provide tremendous relief by releasing trigger points. We use a combination of compression, trigger point therapy, cross fiber friction and range of motion stretches around the occipital ridge to reduce pain and tension. A face and scalp massage also improves circulation to diminish pressure. Clients often report reduced headache frequency after regular monthly sessions.

For Back Pain:

Back discomfort is one of the most common reasons people seek massage therapy. We find the source of the pain by assessing posture, gait and range of motion. Deep tissue techniques like muscle stripping, compression and myofascial release applied to the back release adhesions, support the spine and reduce inflammation. Stretches and joint mobilization provide further relief. If back pain limits your mobility, monthly massages keep you limber and active. Also our Acupuncture and Body Balancing treatment is advised to get a head start in healing.

For Poor Circulation & Swelling:

Massage excels at enhancing circulation throughout the body. For cold hands and feet, we use wringing, friction and tapping over the extremities before moving to the legs with effleurage strokes. Light pumping motions on swollen ankles and lymph nodes drain fluid buildup. These techniques improve blood flow and fluid drainage resulting in warmer extremities and less swelling.

For Insomnia & Fatigue:

If you have trouble falling asleep, massage wonderfully relaxation both body and mind to prepare you for sleep. Long gliding effleurage and gentle rocking motions reduce cortisol levels. We also incorporate acupressure and reflexology to calm the nervous system. The stimulation of pressure points activates the parasympathetic response. Clients report falling asleep quickly and sleeping more soundly overnight after massage sessions.

For Stress Relief & Anxiety:

One of the greatest benefits of massage is its ability to induce profound relaxation. The combination of caring human touch, pain relief and reduced cortisol levels rapidly calms the body. For clients with anxiety, we recommend our meditation and energy work treatments, extra focus on breathwork and being present with us. We welcome you to quieten your mind and surrender your ego, helping you move towards a freed state of being, guiding you into pure consciousness through energy healing.  In this blissful state of ‘presence’ we use the deepest form of communication, being to being, to release stress in the body.  This treatment holds space for you just to be. Falling into pure consciousness.  Working slowly, listening with our hands, we alleviate tensions, softening the stress presenting in your body, welcoming a deep meditative state enabling healing. The guided meditation reduces negative self-talk and restores an inner sense of peace. You'll feel a deep sense of calm after each session.

As you can see, regular massage and therapy can benefit a wide variety of common health goals from better sleep to pain management. Let us help you achieve your specific wellness objectives through the power of regular massage therapy.

The Ideal Massage Pressure For You:

People respond differently to variations in massage pressure. Some clients prefer very light, gentle touch while others request deep tissue techniques. During our time, we inquire about yoru pressure preference. This also depends on the goal - light strokes soothe anxiety while firm pressure targets knots and adhesions. Tension is released in layers so I'll adjust pressure as your body releases. Communication is key so we can adapt as needed.

Here is an overview of the types of pressure:

  • Light Touch - Barely-there long gliding strokes ideal for sensitive skin, energy work or clients new to massage.

  • Light Pressure - Gentle kneading and rocking motions provide mild relaxation for stressed or elderly clients.

  • Medium Pressure - Balanced approach combining Swedish techniques and trigger point therapy. This is a common request.

  • Firm Pressure - Muscle stripping, cross fiber friction and compression reach deeper layers of muscle and fascia. Ideal for releasing chronic tension.

  • Deep Pressure - Very slow, strong pressure with focused fingers or elbows. This helps stubborn knots and scar tissue.

We pride myself on listening attentively and tuning into your needs through the session. Our goal is for you to walk away feeling nurtured, listened to and revitalised.

What To Expect After Your Massage:

Once your massage concludes, take a few moments to rest before getting up. Drink plenty of water post-session to rehydrate and flush out metabolic waste. Your body will continue detoxing over the next 48 hours.

You may feel mild tenderness or soreness after firm pressure. A hot bath with Epsom salts helps reduce muscle aches. Avoid intense workouts right after massage. Instead, get plenty of sleep to integrate the benefits.

The release of feel-good endorphins will boost your mood over the next day. Many clients report a lasting sense of lightness and vitality. Regular monthly massages enhance and prolong these benefits. Your skin will glow thanks to increased circulation and hydration.

Some people experience emotional release during massage. Know that tears and moments of vulnerability are common responses to the power of caring touch. Don't rush out immediately. Allow yourself to integrate the experience before heading back into the world in our meditation room.

Consistency is key for recognising massage's full potential. Schedule regular monthly sessions to lower stress, reduce pain and walk through life with greater ease. Consistent bodywork helps you tune into your body, identify areas of tension and move with more freedom. Let me support you on your wellness journey.
